DETAILING - LEARNING OUTCOMES

Understand Products Used in Detailing and PPE Required	Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Use all necessary PPE for the tasks to be performed.
		2.) Read and understand all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that apply to the task.
		3.) Read and understand all Technical Data Sheets (TDS) that apply to the task.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Know where your PPE is stored and when to use it.
		2.) Know how to access SDS.
		3.) Know how to access TDS.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Make sure apprentice is using PPE as needed for job.
		2.) Make sure apprentice is referencing SDS and TDS as needed.

Prepare Work Area for Detailing	Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Ensure the workspace is clean and organized to permit proper completion of task without damaging vehicle.
		2.) To optimize the process, make sure the vehicle will be out of direct sunlight throughout the entire process.
		3.) Make sure the floor and surrounding areas are clear and hoses, cords, buckets and that any other tools or items are stored properly.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show how to properly prepare the detailing work area.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Make sure apprentice has the workspace clean and organized.

Preparation for Detailing - Stage Vehicle and Review Documentation	Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Bring the vehicle into the workspace/bay and secure keys/fob outside the vehicle in the proper location.
		2.) Review documentation to make sure the correct vehicle has been chosen. Match the VIN to the repair order/estimate along with the customer's name and deliver schedule.
		3.) Do a walk-around to assess overall condition of the vehicle. Note any obvious issues (leaking fluid, unusual noises, strong odors, etc.) related or unrelated to the work performed.
		4.) Note and notify management of any currency, firearms, or other personal items in need of special care before work begins.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you how to properly stage the vehicle and review the documentation prior to beginning work.
		2.) Have a mentor show you where keys are stored outside the vehicle. 3.) Have a mentor show you how to assess overall vehicle condition.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Make sure apprentice correctly stores the keys/fob outside the vehicle.
		2.) Make sure apprentice can properly review the vehicle's documentation and identify obvious issues.
		3.) Make sure the apprentice understands the procedure for taking care of personal items inside the car.

Preparation for Detailing - Initial Quality Inspection	Skill Level 2

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Review the repair order/estimate to insure the proper repairs were completed.
		2.) Note any insufficient repairs and notify the proper personnel immediately if detected.
		3.) Note any preexisting damage and compare to vehicle check-in documentation. Note any discrepancies found.
		4.) Verify any customer requests/services were performed if separate from repair order (e.g. oil change, paint correction, or similar requests). Notify proper personnel if any discrepancies are noted.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you how to check the repair order and how to verify that repairs were properly completed.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Make sure apprentice can properly review the repair order against actual repairs done.
	Skills Assessment	2.) Make sure apprentice knows what to do if any discrepancies are found.

Exterior Cleaning - Remove Overspray	Skill Level 2

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Remove any overspray on vehicle's refinished panels, glass, or trim. Use of a clay bar or mitt should follow the paint manufacturer's or clay manufacturer's instructions.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you how to identify overspray and how to remove it with a clay bar or mitt.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify that the apprentice knows how to properly remove overspray as instructed.

Exterior Cleaning - Apply Tire/Wheel Cleaner	Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Apply tire/wheel cleaner as directed by product manufacturer. (DO NOT USE ACID BASED WHEEL CLEANERS ON PAINTED OR ALUMINUM WHEELS).
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you which product to use for the different types of wheels.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Exterior Cleaning - Wash Vehicle	Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Rinse entire vehicle from the top down. Remove all larger debris with pressure from hose if applicable.
		2.) Use compatible car wash soap and begin cleaning the exterior surfaces with a non-marring mitt. Do not let the suds dry on the vehicle, wash only one area/section at a time if needed to keep all soap and surfaces wet. Begin at the top of the vehicle and work downward.
		3.) Rinse as necessary and complete a final overall rinse of the vehicle.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you the proper process for rinsing and washing a vehicle.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Paint Correction - Inspect Panel in Detail and Plan Repair	Skill Level 2

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Inspect repaired/ refinished area for a second time to find/note any possible defects in the refinished parts/panels.
		2.) Review and plan any paint correction (touch- up/scratch repair) in unrelated areas if customer requested.
		3.) Research paint manufacturers guidelines and procedures for correction before beginning the process.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Work with a mentor for a period of time and have him/her instruct you on how to find and repair any paint defects.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Give the apprentice simple jobs at first, verify compliance to instructions, inspect final quality, and give progressively more difficult work as he/she gains skill.

Paint Correction - Measure Paint Thickness			Skill Level 2

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Use a paint thickness gauge to determine the film thickness in several locations in the area to be corrected.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you how to properly use a paint thickness gauge.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Perform Paint Correction			Skill Level 2

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Using the least aggressive method, perform the paint correction. (insert more detail here about cutting and buffing).
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Work with a mentor for a period of time and have him/her instruct you on how to find and repair any paint defects.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Give the apprentice simple jobs at first, verify compliance to instructions, inspect final quality, and give progressively more difficult work as he/she gains skill.

Interior Cleaning - Clean Glass			Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Clean glass with a non-ammonia type product.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you the proper glass cleaning product and how to use it.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Interior Cleaning - Clean Plastic Surfaces			Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Clean hard and soft plastic surfaces with the appropriate cleaner. Test an inconspicuous are first to insure compatibility.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you the proper surface cleaning products and how to use them.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Interior Cleaning - Clean Upholstery			Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Use brushes in conjunction with a vacuum if necessary. Make sure the brushes are soft and will not cause scratches or other damage to the surface being cleaned.
	Work Practices	2.) Cleaners for stains on fabric, leather, plastic, rubber and carpet MUST be checked before use as not to cause additional damage. Consult with management before attempting stain removal of any kind.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you the proper surface cleaning products and how to properly remove stains from upholstery and carpet.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Interior Cleaning - Vacuum			Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Vacuum the carpet and fabric seats as necessary (do not vacuum leather seats or plastic surfaces as marks can be made by contacting the surface with the tool).
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you to properly use a vacuum and how to remove stains from upholstery and carpet.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.

Final Inspection - Review Repair Order			Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Review repair order/estimate to ensure work has been completed as prescribed and is correct.
		2.) Verify any customer requests have been completed.
		3.) Note any MIL or any other dash indicators if abnormal. Notify management if discrepancies are noted.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Have a mentor show you how to review the repair order against actual work done and how to identify any discrepancies.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Mentor the apprentice through several jobs and gauge his/her ability to take over the task without supervision.

Prepare for Delivery			Skill Level 1

Detailing	Work Practices	1.) Set radio to station or reenter presets if directed and decrease volume to barley audible.
	Work Practices	2.) Perform final quality check of detail process and make ready for delivery as directed.
	In-Shop Experience	1.) Perform pre-delivery SOP.
	Skills Assessment	1.) Verify compliance with instructions.
