Many grilles and two-part bumper covers are attached with snap-in tabs that can be frustrating to separate. Many times, a dozen or more of these tabs must be pried apart to separate the components. Inevitably, some of them will pop back together as you are prying others apart, leading to time-wasting struggles. The 6142 Shim Jim Tab Separator Tool will help you to easily disassemble these aggravating snap-in tabs.
The 6142 Shim Jim tab separator tool from Polyvance is designed to help you separate the snap-in tabs that often hold grilles and trim into bumper covers. The tool kit comes with the main pry tool and 25 shims that will hold the snap-in tabs apart. The Shim Jim's pistol grip design helps you to easily pry each tab apart with a twist of the wrist. The tip of the tool features three different working edges to match narrow, medium, and wide tabs. Most importantly, the 25 specially shaped shims will hold the snap-in tabs apart. The galvanized steel shims have a wedge shape to accommodate different tab widths and a turned down edge for easier handling.
Always wear proper safety gear while working!

This large two-piece bumper is a perfect example. It has 18 snap-in tabs that hold the upper and lower together. To keep from wrestling the bumper itself, we have fixtured it with the Polyvance 6076 Bumper Stabilizer. We then begin by prying each tab apart starting at one end and working toward the other. As the tab is pried apart, insert one of the shims to keep the tab separated. The shims have a lip to make them easier to handle and to keep them from pushing all the way through and falling out. Continue this process all the way across, tab by tab. Once you have all the tabs separated and the shims inserted, then you can push the parts apart very easily.
The Shim Jim’s tool has three working tips to help separate tabs of different widths. Here we’re using the small tip to pry apart a narrow tab. The leverage provided by the pistol grip design allows you to quickly pry the tab apart with just a twist of the wrist. The pry tool also features a convenient bottle opener so you can celebrate a job well done!
