When we see our plastic welders in use in shops, we're often concerned that the technicians are welding at a temperature that is too high for the type of plastic they are welding. When we ask, they typically reply that the plastic welds faster at a higher temperature.
This is true; however, you can weaken the weld by welding at too high a temperature. The effect is more pronounced on certain types of plastic, one of which is PVC ("vinyl").
We recently performed instrumental peel tests on PVC welds at 850 degrees Fahrenheit and 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. In this short video, we share our findings that show the PVC welds are weaker when welded at too high a temperature.
