How to repair blow molded Jeep bumpers
We got a call from a customer a few weeks ago asking how to repair the bumpers on the late model JK-series Jeep Wranglers. Unlike most bumpers on the market which are injection molded, the Wranger's bumpers are blow molded from TPO (PP/EPDM). Blow molding is the same process used to make soda bottles -- compressed air is injected into a heated preform inside of a closed mold, making a hollow part.
Jeep won an award for this process from Plastics Technology magazine in 2007 when the JK-model was introduced. The part saves weight and cost over using traditional methods and meets all crash standards. The downside is, is because it's hollow, means you can't get to the backside to do any repairs.
Thankfully for you, Polyvance is the only plastic repair product manufacturer on Planet Earth with its own bumper recycling facility that repairs bumpers for customers on a daily basis! (See www.encorebumpers.com). Our master technician and lead trainer, John Wilburn, will be researching repair methods on the Jeep Wrangler bumpers. Keep an eye on Polyvance.com (as well as our YouTube channel) for any remarkable, Nobel Prize-worthy findings to which Stickyman may lay claim.
